moral sense

"Miyazaki-like."

submission: moral sense
date: May 31, 2009

Similar to "A Bamboo Hat," this simple animation accurately depicts the moral compass of the generations. The grass, soundtrack, and human interaction with nature is almost Hayao Miyazaki-like.

A bamboo hat

"Cute flash that gives impact without words."

submission: A bamboo hat
date: May 31, 2009

A cute animation, with a simple style and color palette, that leaves an impact. It covers the topic of greed, and the effect of giving to someone who does not deserve it.

The sound effects suffer from some syncing issues. The ending music is pleasing to the ear and soulful, and perhaps better suited to the main part of the animation than the simple strings the author is currently using.

The end of robbie

"Confused..."

submission: The end of robbie

I am confused. What was the purpose of this flash?

Is Robbie someone you made up?

Why a random stabbing and beheading?

There She Is!! step4

"Dark, Cute, Awesome!"

date: September 13, 2008

The tone is darker than with previous episodes, but in an amazing way.

One of the subtle things I noticed after watching this a few times is that after the cat boy and bunny girl "blend in" and give up hope, they turn grey. The cat boy's green scarf turns charcoal after he paints over the doors. The bunny girl loses her orange blush and the pink in her bow at the very end.

I love how the color (or lack thereof) draws attention to significant aspects.

I am looking forward to Step 5!

The 12 Days to TP

"Cute Short, Lovely Lon Lon During Credits"

submission: The 12 Days to TP
date: March 22, 2008

I normally don't listen to something like this all the way to the end, but the author mixed things up a little bit by changing the "Five golden rings" each way through to match the type of music being presented (bagpipes, drums, electric guitar, etc).

And if I might say, she certainly has a lovely singing voice.

Xombie: Chapter 9

"Excellent Animations Scenes But the Ending = Eh"

submission: Xombie: Chapter 9
date: April 27, 2007

The siloutte of Dirge fighting was extremely fluid.

Cutting the film in the middle of a climatic battle is a very good way to lead into a promotion/sequel. If people really want to see what happens, if they are so engrossed in the story, they will go to great lengths to acquire the ending.

The only part I absolutely hated was Dirge pressing the viewer to "BUY THE DAMN BOOK." You could really feel Farr's own bitterness come out... Personally, I think it's a compliment for people to think the animation is too short - it means they enjoy your work and want more. But Flash takes an insane amount of time and Farr has a life, of course. He needs to make money and support himself somehow. That said, I'm not against authors promoting their merchandise, but having Dirge's voice actor say those lines was seriously unbecoming. I'd rather not grow to hate Dirge. He's too cool a character for that.

Anyway, the tirade turned me off versus entice me. And I do buy custom comic books (i.e. Mayshing's 2Masters). Maybe if he said something like, "And the rest of the story...is here" the promo would have been received better. =/

Elf needs food badly

"Amusing"

date: October 17, 2005

Story. Hilarious. Anyone who has played any kind of multi-player RPG can sympathize. We know what it feels like to be with someone who is both selfish and ignorant, who gets disconnected and lags constantly, who never listens to reason and leaves the party in a predicament. The private messages mirrored the frustration perfectly. Comments like "you ass grabbing son of a bitch" and "I'd like to extend the definition of eating to fornication" made me crack up.

Graphics. Very simple but effective, as the flash is meant to convey that nostalgic, old-style gaming quality.

Animation. The most complex animation we get is 2-frame walks and some projectiles, just like 8bit Nintendo games. However, at some points the characters move very fast or very slow at different spacings, versus the uniform 4-direction movements on a gridlike layout that occurred with older games. I'm guessing some artistic license occurred here to make the presentation less boring and/or confusing.

Text. Blocky text, just like in ye games o' olde. My only whine is that it is difficult to read sometimes. For example, the two "m"s in Wizard's "dummy" fuse together somewhat. Also, Elf's text (just before Elf went into the hut) blends in with the background. To remedy this problem, I would suggest either using a textbox and/or completely outlining the white letters in a significantly dark color.

A sequel or similar product would be muchly appreciated.

We love Sony

"Cute."

submission: We love Sony
date: October 15, 2005

You've accomplished more in 32KB than most people do in 5MB.

Very simple, sweet, and to the point.

My only suggestion would be to have the ending text appear more in the middle of the screen as "WE LOVE YOU, SONY."

Author's Response:

Thanks, it was a bit of a gamble, putting this on NG, because of the size, duration, minimal sounds etc.
But I only wanted to show that it doesn't take much to make a nice movie, as long as it has a message.

Mario Tetris: GM Edition

"Excellent."

date: October 14, 2005

Absolutely gorgeous. Obviously, a lot of thought went into this.

Graphics. You had me caught at the Mario hand cursor. Overall, sprites are seamless. We have the colored blocks and backgrounds from the SNES Mario, along with a Flash-drawn one. The text is also Flash-drawn, but it is very similar to the well-known Mario text. Ah, nostalgia.

Sound. Sounds are very appropriate. Coin-collecting sound when we roll over options. Bashing-a-block sound when a block hits the bottom. Mario's dying sound when we lose.

Options. Hey, a pause option! Awesome. =9 Good for potty breaks and so we can also mess around with backgrounds and music to our heart's content. We also have the standard Quality options: Low, Medium, High, and Best.

Backgrounds. Yes! Finally an option for backgrounds. Yoshi's Island, a night sky, scrolling dungeon walls...my only recommendation would be to consider putting in some 8-bit and 3-D backgrounds to go with the music.

Music. YES! Choices for music! Liked the old Mario? Choose the Overworld Theme or the Water Theme. Want Mario 64 tunes? You have everything from Jolly Roger Bay to Ultimate Koopa. Want a remix? We have Tetris (Ska) and the Orchestrated overworld theme. There's even a "No Sound" option so you can listen to your own music.

You've managed to seamlessly combine the original Tetris with Mario, plus give us more options. You have my 5.

Also, I haven't gotten very far, but is there an ending to the game or some type of reward system when you reach a certain level or so many points? If not, that may be good to implement.
